National Conference on

State, Nation and Civil Society in the Dalit, Bahujan Discourse in Maharashtra

The Department of Political Science a National Conference on State, Nation and Civil Society in the Dalit Bahujan Discourse in Maharashtra on the 12th& 13th of January 2012. The aim of the Conference was to explore and construct the Indian contribution to the ongoing debate on State, Nation and Civil Society with specific reference to the Dalit-Bahujan Discourse. The Conference also explored the possibility of the emergence of an autonomous Civil Society in a caste-ridden unequal social structure of India.
Professor Yashwant Sumant (Dept of Politics & Public Administration, University of Pune) delivered the key note address of this conference. Prof. Sanjeeb Mukherjee (Calcutta University, Kolkata) and Prof. Papia Sengupta (Kirori Mal College, New Delhi), Prof. Raja Dixit (Department of Inter-disciplinary Studies, University of Pune) and Chaitra Redkar (Department of Political Science, S. N. D. T. Women's University), Prof. Chitra Lele (SNDT College of Arts & S.C.B College of Com. & Sc. For Women, Mumbai), Prof. Bharti Patil (Shivaji University, Kolhapur), Prof. Sadanand More (Dept. of Philosophy, University of Pune), Prof. Ashok Chousalkar (Dept. of Political Science, Shivaji University, Kolhapur) contributed in this conference in the capacity of resource persons. The key note address was delivered by Professor Gopal Guru (Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University – New Delhi).
The conference was widely attended by the researchers, journalists, activists and students from different parts of Maharashtra who made interesting contributions in the discussions.

Avishkar 2011-2012

Four of our students bagged prizes at the Sixth StateInter-University Research Convention, "Avishkar 2011-12 held at ShivajiUniversity, Kolhapur from 13th January to 15th January, 2012.

Ms. Sneha D. Raut, C.U.ShahCollege of Pharmacy won the FIRST PRIZE in the Agriculture and AnimalHusbandry category PG level. Shepresented research work on “A novel phytoliposomal formulation for apolyherbal mix containing curcumin” guided by Dr P.A. Tatke. Ms Manju Dhami,C.U.Shah College of Pharmacy won the SECONDPRIZE in the same category PG level presenting the research work “Brahmi Ghrita An Extract In A Novel ImprovedForm For Memory Enhancement” under the guidance of Dr K.K.Singh.

The Rotating Championship trophy in thiscategory of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry category is being shared by SNDTWomen's University, Mumbai University and North Maharashtra University.

Ashwini Shanbaug C.U.Shah College of Pharmacy presentedthe work on “Designingof Newer Antimalarials using the approach of Docking and QSAR” studies bagging FIRST PRIZE in Medicineand Pharmacy Category UG level. The work was guided by Dr. S.S Mahajan

Preksha Gandhi,Department of Human Development, PGSR in Home Science got the SECOND PRIZE inthe Humanities, Languages, Fine Arts category PGlevel on her work “Relationship between effective performancefactors and teacher retention in pre-primary and primary teachers” whichwas carried out under guidance of Dr. Reeta Sonawat.

National Workshop on ‘Learning Disability’

Learning Disability, though it is prevalent at un-ignorable level in our society has still not got momentum in the field of education the way it should have got. Misconception about learning disability is still part of our mind while dealing with academic issues of the students. To bridge the gap, Post Graduate Department of Psychology, S.N.D.T Women’s University, Pune Campus had organised a National Workshop on Learning Disability on 25th January 2012, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Psychology, Delhi and by Prasad Psycho Corporation who sponsored the workshop.

The workshop had multiple objectives ranging from educating and spreading awareness to diagnosing and addressing remedial aspect of Leaning Disability among mental health professionals and students. Ms. Apoorva Panshikar was the main resource person, who demonstrated the widely used learning disability assessment tools such as the DTLD, DTRD, TTS and BCSLD. There were 129 participants who had come from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Prof. P.H. Lodhi, Kranti Shrivastav and Dr. Medha Deshpande inaugurated the workshop. Dr. Ramesh Pathare, the Head of the Dept. was the convener of this workshop.

The department of Students’ Welfare has successfully conducted the Tejaswini Contest 2012 from 14th to 16th January, 2012 at Churchgate Campus. 66 students participated in the contest from all the SNDT colleges, from Mumbai, along with Surat, Ahmedabad, Indore, Noida, Goa. During this period various types of competitions were organized like Quiz, Creative Essay writing, Extempore, Physical fitness test, Group Discussion and Open Interview. The contestants underwent these tests and were qualified for the final round on 16th January 2012. These competitions were judged by eminent judges.

Dr. Archana Bhatnagar, Head, Department of Family Resource management, PGSR Home Science, Juhu Campus along with her team of students’ conducted Physical fitness test., Personal interview was conducted by the jury members, Prof. T.J. Mathew, JDBIMS, Juhu Dr. Bhanupratap Singh, Dept. of Continuing and Adult Education & Extension, Churchgate and Ms. Varsha Kulkarni, lecturer from Clara’s College of Education. The Judges for Extempore Speech were Dr. Ramesh Deokar, NSS Cell, Mumbai University and Dr. Ariff Sayyad, Social Worker.

The final day, there were five rounds conducted by Prof. Vibhuti Patel, Director, PGSR, Churchgate. In the first round all the contestants introduced themselves to the audience.

The second round selected 38 contestants were given situational questions to test their thinking ability and were eliminated accordingly. The third round was a talent round for 26 selected contestants to test their talents based on performances. The fourth round the Judges question round for 6 students. The fifth round a common question was given and the contestants wrote and read the answers one by one.

Finally Tejaswini, Ist Runner up and IInd Runner up were selected.

They were Judged by eminent Judges Mr. Sampson David, Deputy Secretary, AIU, Delhi, Ms. Sonal Shukla, Women Activist, Director,Vacha & Columnist, Ms. Poorvi Chothani, Attory, USA, Law Guest Int., Ladies wing of Indian Merchant Chamber, Ms. Samhita Bhakre, Associate Vice President, OMD, Advising Media Agencies, Ms. Archana Kochhar, Fashion Designer & Dr. Firdos Shroff, Expert in Banking System.

The Valedictory function was held on 16th Jan., 2012. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vasudha Kamat presided over the function. Ms. Nilufer Ahmed, Dean of Students’ Welfare welcomed & introduced the guest. Dr. Sampson David, Guest of Honour addressed the students.

SNDT Women’sUniversity inaugurated the Maharshi Karve Lecture Series with aninaugural lecture by Professor Ram Takwale on the 19^th Jan 2012. In her inauguraladdress, the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Vandana Chakrabarti said thelecture series was conceived as an interface between the university andthe outside world, where the best minds would be invited to discuss thetoughest questions of our times.

Prof. Takwale spokeon “New Education for Empowering Learners in an Always ConnectedSociety”. He began with the pertinent question: teachers today musteducate a generation who has a better hold on technology thanthemselves. How can teachers adapt themselves productively to thissituation? He stressed on the need for new forms of learning in keepingwith the new kinds of technology available to the learners.

The talkhighlighted the ways in which technology could be integrated into theteaching learning process. The lecture provoked a large number ofengaged questions from the audience. The event concluded with the ViceChancellor Prof Vasudha Kamat's presidential address, which emphasizedthe difference between information dissemination and learning, ProfKamat also argued that learning includes the processes of learning and not merely the content which is tobe learnt.

Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University, celebrates its 61st Annual Convocation on 7th Dec 2011 at 11.30 am at the Sir Sitaram and Lady Shantabai Patkar Deekshant Sabhagriha, 1 Nathibai Thackersey Road, Mumbai 400020.

Since its inception in 1916, SNDT Women’s University, has been a center of quality education for women. Established to promote the concept that ‘the educated woman is a source of infinite strength’ the University is home to 4,500 faculty members and more than 75,000 students spread across 6 states.

At the 61st convocation, the University awarded 23295 meritorious students with Degrees and Diplomas from its 102 programmes. This includes 10 new degrees that will be awarded for the first time this year.

Honorary D. Litt. Awardee

Prof. Vijaya Mulay

Educationist, Educational Film Maker &
Social Activist, New Delhi

Prof Vijaya Mulay was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) in this convocation. Prof Mulay retired from NCERT in 1981 and has noted work to her credit in the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Ministry of Education. At the age of 90 she published From Rajas and Yogis to Gandhi and Beyond: Images of India in International films of the 20th Century a book covering about 900 international films between 1901 and 2000. She has been awarded the Swarna Kamal National Award for best writing on cinema. Prof Mulay shared her personal experience of how her mother was stopped from reading by her father-in-law in those days. Prof Mulay in her address emphasized the fact that SNDT is unique in more than one ways. Apart from the dreamer like Bharat Ratan Maharashi Kurve who thought of women’s education at a time no one thought of, it has contributions by people like Parvatibai. She shared her conversation with Durga Khoteji about how Parvatibai saved on transport and walked in heat to collect funds for Kurve’s dream institution. Prof Mulay stressed on the fact that institutions are built by contributions by many widows like Parvatibai and others.

The Chief Guest for the 61st convocation was Prof Asha Kanwar, Vice President, Commonwealth of Learning, Vancouver, Canada. Professor Kanwar has earlier worked with UNESCO’s Regional office for Education in Africa (BREDA) in Dakar, Senegal. She has also served as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University. She has received the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) prize of Excellence in 2009. Prof Kanwar shared with the graduating students that her mother was stopped from studies after fourth class in Himachal Pradesh. She expressed that only women’s institutions are important and institutions like SNDT very well ahead of their times. Citing various sources emphasising need and importance of women’s leadership and contribution, Prof Kanwal reinstated that women’s empowerment is need and reality of life. Advising new generation of women, she shared that ambition is not a bad word any more and we are in a decade of learn-unlearn and relearn. Sharing three pillars of lifelong learning, ambition and hard work, Prof Kanwal noted that people who succeeded are the people who practice.

SNDT in its 61^st convocation awarded 29 PhD, 39 MPhil, 3229 Masters and 268 PG Diplomas apart from 19141 Bachelors and 582 undergraduate diplomas besides 7 certificates. With total of 75,564 students in the academic year 2010-11, the university comprises of 40 University Departments, 11 conducted colleges, five centres/institutions, 223 affiliated colleges and an autonomous college. There are six institutions recognised by SNDT for PhD degree.

Inauguration of Website and Release of eNewsletter

SNDT Women’s University saw an exciting Dussera this year with the simultaneous release of its bi-monthly e-newsletter and the new updated website. The event was held at the committee room in the Churchgate Campus with Vice Chancellor Prof. Vasudha Kamat presiding over the event. The Website was inaugurated by His Excellency
Shri K. Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra. Appropriately, this unique event took place in cyberspace; while the audience participated in the program from the University campus at Churchgate and the Chief Guest conducted the inauguration from his office at Malabar Hill. The interface between the two locations was a video conference via Skype which was being projected and watched live by both parties.

Having executed the inauguration with the click of a button, His Excellency Shri K. Sankaranarayanan, congratulated SNDT Women’s University on the successful launch of its website and e-newsletter, he expressed happiness at the initiative shown by the university in taking timely advantage of the growing information technology sector.

Inauguration of Model College at Shrivardhan

The University established the Maharashi Karve Model College for Women at Shriwardhan under the Scheme for Financial Assistance for Opening New Model Colleges in Educationally Backward Districts in Maharashtra by the University Grants Commission, State Government of Maharashtra.

The College was inaugurated on August 30, 2011 at 3.p.m. by Shri. Sunil Tatkare, Honorable Minister of Water Resources, State of Maharashtra and the Guardian Minister for Alibag District. The college has started BCA course with thirty seven students with Computer Laboratory, Library and other necessary facilities for teaching and non-teaching staff.

The Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Vandana Chakrabarti, Director, Board of College and University Development, Dr. S. Kumudhavalli and Controller of Examination, Dr.Mandhare and In- charge Co-ordinator, Dr. Ashok Salve were present for the inauguration. The plaque of the College was unveiled by Shri. Sunil Tatkare.

Independence Day Celebration at Juhu Campus

We, at Juhu Campus of the University, celebrated Independence Day with grace and pride for the Nation.

Hon'ble Vice Chancellor hoisted the flag sharp at 9.30 am in the presence of faculty, staff and students of the University.

The event was celebrated by presenting patriotic songs, yoga demo, dance and speech of Hon'ble Vice chancellor.

The event was graced by the presence of Former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Jyotiben Trivedi.
